In Ulaanbaatar the community of Missionari della Consolata, while waiting to get started with a presence in the outskirts of the city (the so-called “ger-district”), cooperates with parishes and other projects of the local Church, like the formation of catechists and training for the Mongolian Catholics. They offer a qualified service to the Apostolic Prefecture in its various offices.

In 2006 Missionari della Consolata also opened a mission in Arvaiheer. There a small Catholic community has grown and missionaries devote themselves to accompanying this community in its journey of faith. Besides the activities related to evangelization, missionaries are involved in social projects aimed at empowering families and supporting human promotion, namely education, health and development.

Within the same Province (Uvurkhangai) Missionari della Consolata are present in the ancient capital of the Mongolian Empire, Kharkhorin (Karakorum), where for the time being they don’t have a resident community, but they’re preparing the ground for committing themselves to interreligious dialogue and cultural research.

Though primary education is formally free and accessible, there are still many families who cannot make it to send their children to state kindergartens. Poverty, lack of documents and other problems within the family keep many kids far from this fundamental right. Therefore we thought of offering them an informal pre-school program, by equipping for them a big ger within our yard: this care center has become since 2013 a reference for many families.

Today we have 26 children aged 2 to 5, regularly enrolled in our center. For them we put up an educational and recreational program that includes three meals a day and a lot of attention to their needs. Their families don’t have expenses to shoulder, they are rather invited to collaborate with manual work for the maintenance of the ger and by actively participating in the training sessions we prepare for them. The one in charge of the center is a retired teacher, helped by one young mother and one cook.

Every day in our mission of Arvaiheer we offer to boys and girls of the neighborhood a time to study, play and socialization, including English classes. We have soccer, volley and basketball courts available for them. Moreover we have a big ger specifically designed to be a safe and warm space for children activities; in the long and harsh Mongolian winter time, this ger becomes very crowded, being the only place where to spend their free time. Every day we offer either a snack or a full meal, before they return to their homes.
